My Story

This is my story of dealing with the serious condition of GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease) that demanded I let go of so many foods that I love. This story has a happy ending – how I learned to live (and live well!) with GERD and then, best of all, to share it with you. If you are also a GERD sufferer, you won’t have to reinvent so many wheels in finding your way to healthier and tastier living.

I’m American, but I lived in a number of European countries for 20 years. Since I come from a long line of great cooks, I dedicated myself to learning the cuisine of every country I lived in. I ate in humble country kitchens, learned at the apron strings of great local cooks, dined in Michelin-starred restaurants and cooked seasonally. I loved it all. When I was 45, after a successful career in Europe, my family and I moved back to America. We landed in a small Midwest university town. It was wonderful to be back and see family and old friends more frequently. Our daughter was growing up in that wonderful American school lifestyle with all the sports, dance and what-have-you, but I realized that I was in a dead-end job with a toxic work environment. I thought I could take it if I ignored the dysfunction. At 50, I was overweight, angry, depressed, had chronic bronchitis, hoarseness and my family doctor just kept prescribing antibiotics and Prednisone. I was sick all the time, every day, night and day. My American dream had become a nightmare.

At 51, the hammer came down. The diagnosis from the otolaryngologist and gastroenterologist: severe GERD, aspiration bronchitis/pneumonia and asthma, damaged lungs, a granuloma above my vocal chords, blood pressure at heart attack level.

This blog is the story of how I dealt with GERD and other health problems, have become happy and feel great every day! I am writing this for everyone who has to deal with similar problems in diet and exercise. I am not a doctor and I am not giving medical advice. This is how I became a wellness warrior.

Most importantly, this is how I got off medication and live within the GERD diet and still cook wonderful things that people love to eat. Quick, seasonal, organic and not expensive.
